God wants us to put respect on His name! But not because He’s some demanding tyrant. It’s because He wants to have a relationship with us.
The catechism says in paragraph 2143, “Among all the words of Revelation, there is one which is unique: the revealed name of God. God confides his name to those who believe in him; he reveals himself to them in his personal mystery. The gift of a name belongs to the order of trust and intimacy. "The Lord's name is holy." For this reason man must not abuse it. He must keep it in mind in silent, loving adoration. He will not introduce it into his own speech except to bless, praise, and glorify it.”
Now you might say, what about saying “OMG” or “Oh my God!”. “I don’t really mean it when I’m saying it. It’s just a figure of speech.” But taking the Lord’s name in vain actually means “to not mean it”.
Think about it, God revealed His NAME. He introduces Himself and shares His name. If you want to grow in your relationship with God, put some respect on His name! Cultivating this discipline will actually change the way you think and relate to God. It will change how you experience prayer, when you DO use His name, and mean it!
