Did John the Baptist invent baptism? Actually, no. The story of baptism goes back to our Jewish ancestry with the ritual cleansing of the Mikvah. Jesus combines the baptism of John the Baptist and the idea of mikvah’s and ritual cleaning into a sacrament in the Church. Through the Holy Spirit, baptism is a bath that purifies, justifies, and sanctifies. Baptism washes us from our sins.
