Todos temos necessidade de ser curados. Alguns de nós pode precisar decura física ou emocional, mas todos nós precisamos de cura espiritual. São Paulo afirma em Romanos 3,23: “…sendo que todos pecaram e todos estão privados da glória de Deus.”
Deus sabe que nós não podemos fazer remendos pelos nossos pecados por conta própria. Essa é a razão fundamental pela qual Ele enviou Jesus—para salvar-nos dos nossos pecados. Mas na vida do dia a dia, muitas vezes somos insuficientes. Por isso, Deus nos enviou dois sacramentos pensados especialmente para curarnos: o Sacramento da Penitência e o Sacramento da Unção dos Enfermos.
No Sacramento da Penitência, obtemos o perdão de Deus para os nossos pecados e, ao mesmo tempo, somos reconciliados com a Igreja e com o povo de Deus. Através desse sacramento, recebemos a cura espiritual da qual precisamos.
Algumas vezes, também, podemos beneficiar-nos do segundo sacramento de cura—a Unção dos Enfermos. Nesse sacramento, uma pessoa batizada que se encontrar em perigo de morte, seja por doença ou idade avançada, recebe fortaleza, coragem e paz para suportar seu sofrimento, assim como o perdão dos pecados se a pessoa não estiver apta a receber o Sacramento da Penitência. O sacramento poderá trazer também a restauração da saúde, se isso for conduzir a pessoa a sua salvação, e isso a prepara para o trânsito à vida eterna.
