Una de las primeras cosas que realiza Jesús, durante su ministerio público en Galilea, es el llamado de sus primeros cuatro discípulos, acción que luego continúa con el llamado de Levi, y el llamado e institución de los doce. Esto quiere decir que el ministerio público de Jesús está intrínsicamente relacionado con el llamado discipular, que consiste en la elección y seguimiento de Jesús, no solo de los doce sino también de los discípulos anónimos que aparecen en la narración. El objetivo de esta relación discipular con el Maestro consiste en establecer una nueva familia unida por medio del lazo de fe.
Una de las formas características de cómo se revela la naturaleza divina de Jesús es por medio de sus obras milagrosas y exorcismos. La confrontación con los endemoniados demuestra que los entes malignos reconocen a Jesús por lo que es: “el Hijo de Dios”, y aceptan su autoridad, obedeciéndolo. Su naturaleza y poder divino también se manifiesta a través de las sanaciones de enfermos, paralíticos, lisiados y leprosos, entre otros.
Además de las obras prodigiosas, también es fundamental en el ministerio público del Señor su labor didáctica, ya que Jesús está constantemente enseñando y proclamando los misterios del reino de Dios, pero su enseñanza es manifestada de manera práctica y por medio de parábolas para hacer más comprensibles los misterios del reino de Dios.
