As rational humans we desire to understand the world around us. We use inventions, discoveries, and definitions to reliably move through the world and accomplish great achievements. In the physical world, we can “discover” a law of nature that existed whether we knew it or not. In a similar way, we can “discover” laws about how we ought to act as human persons. This is the realm of philosophy called morality. And while we may think the moral law is hard to prove, it turns out the laws of the physical world can be just as elusive. Which leaves us wondering: can we turn somewhere to help us “discover” universal truths that resonate with our moral intuitions? Wouldn’t it be helpful if we could look back on human history and discover there are moral laws that accurately define how a human person should act in order to live “fully alive” as a human person?
