A partir de Mc 8:27 se comienza a observar un cambio en la tonalidad de la narración del evangelio, porque se emprende el camino de Jesús hacia Jerusalén que es el lugar donde se llevará a cabo el cumplimiento del destino del Hijo del Hombre.
Esta jornada está marcada por la explícita enseñanza de Jesús sobre su destino, que es esencialmente la misión redentora que implica la humillación, pasión, muerte y resurrección del Hijo del Hombre. Este mensaje se expresa de manera especial tres veces en el camino hacia Jerusalén, y todos los eventos, encuentros, sanaciones, y milagros enmarcados en esta sección convergen en este punto focal de fe.
