How can forgiveness, mercy, justice, and retribution interact in a healthy society? The topic of forgiveness and justice related to offenses against us is complicated and dynamic. And our world’s approach to justice for crimes can so often be unhelpful for victims and perpetrators. What does true forgiveness look like? What is true justice? And do we believe forgiveness has a valid place in a society that encourages virtue? Ultimately, these questions lead us to asking, do we really believe we can forgive and be forgiven?
