Br. Carino of Balsamo
08-Dec-2025
In the 13th century, the Dominican inquisitor Peter of Verona was assassinated by Carino, a young thug hired by Cathar conspirators threatened by Peter’s powerful preaching. After brutally striking Peter on the road to Milan, Carino fled, but the martyr’s final act of writing Credo (“I believe”) in his own blood haunted him. Years later, gravely ill and fearing death, Carino confessed his crime to the Dominicans in Forlì, experienced a miraculous conversion and recovery, and spent the next 40 years living a life of penance, prayer, and service as a lay brother.
