We all know the familiar words: "to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do us part." They are part of the time-honored traditional vows of marriage, and they form the cornerstone of the Catholic Rite of Matrimony. However, it would seem that the popular view of dating today has nothing to do with preparing for the time-honored traditional vows of marriage. In fact, it is usually a better preparation for divorce than for a lifelong, joy-filled marriage. Popular culture needs to rediscover principles of healthy dating based upon the dignity of the human person and the vocation to love.
