Sometimes it can be tempting to think of the people in prison as mere criminals, with few redeeming qualities and no rights to our compassion or love. But oftentimes these people are suffering, ill and have nowhere to go; we need to remember that they still have dignity as persons.
That’s why I had Matthew Crane on the show today. Matthew has worked in prisons for years, helping the mentally ill and trying to get criminals back on their feet. Unfortunately, the system often isn’t set up to actually help these guys and gals — it just gets them out of the way.
Listen to our conversation to hear Matthew’s take on how our prisons can actually help the people inside them — and how we as Catholics can treat even the people in prisons like persons deserving of love.
