El brillante joven Agustín opina que las creencias religiosas de su madre son pamplinas. Seguro de qu su «intelecto superior» lo guiará, abandona su hogar a escondidas y se aventura a una nueva vida en la ciudad de Roma. Al poco tiempo Agustín asume un importante puesto como Vocero del Emperador, con lo cual puede permitirse la vida fastuosa que siempre había anhelado.
Cuando el imperio decide tomar por la fuerza la basílica cristiana, Agustín se prepara para dar un discurso decisivo que amenaza con poner freno a la creciente ola de influencia del cristianismo. Con el apoyo de su devota madre y del imperturbable obispo Ambrosio de un lado, y un escuadrón de soldados embravecidos del otro, Agustín se ve forzado a decidir a quién servirá.
