Have you ever wondered how to really help the homeless? When it seems like money, food, housing, jobs, and opportunities are so available, what keeps a person experiencing homelessness on the streets for so long? Many think the reasons are for substance abuse orlaziness, but the deepest reason is something else:
despair.
After struggling for so long on the streets, those who experience chronic homelessness have given up on a better life. They feel abandoned by society and have lost reason to hope. Christ in the City seeks to restore this hope by offering something that which has been most neglected: love.
Christ in the City is a Catholic formation program for college-aged young adults who desire to be missionaries for life. Through intense prayer, studies, and community life, missionaries are equipped to transform the world according to the Gospel, and this mission begins with the chronically homeless. Through authentic friendship, missionaries remind the homeless of their dignity and serve as a bridge to reconcile them with society and with God. “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40).
